Instructed by Ryan Palider
Fall 2024

The project aims to create an extension for the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) of Philadelphia with programs for exhibition, education, and assembly. The course of the project focused on the relationship between figures, voids, and poches, of which the rigidness, integrity, and solidity were aimed to be challenged to formulate an interrelationship between spaces and spaces, between exhibited objects and objects. The interrelationship is facilitated by tectonic approaches of a series of surfaces that regulate the visibility, angles, and transmissibility between spaces. With gestural transparency between spaces created by openings between surfaces, the new perspective would be formulated into framed and fragmented images. It would also generate the potential for interaction between the elements between spaces, that place the artwork in different or wider constructs. The control of visibility between the building interior and the surrounding environment also would create possible dialogues with the community that tempers the rectilinear rigidness in contrast to the existing ICA building, to augment the interaction from room to room to architecture to the community.

The project started with formal experimentation that explored the ready-made items and artistic representation of objects.
The assigned object is a swirl caster that has a quality of rotation and movement, to which I related to the cubist and cubo-futurist still-lives, as well as the installation displayed in the ICA by Michel Lopez.

The exploration resulted in a produced object that embodies the quality of the object, as well as the relationship of figure and void, which produces a condition of poche.

The spatial organization took regard to the programmatic relationship at the horizontal level.

The transparency and control geometries are thus determined based on the spatial arrangement.
