Casting Containers
Parts of “Architecture Design I” studio works
Instructed by Prof. Kelley Murphy
Fall 2021
This project is a combination of residence, studio, and gallery, and its design elements are developed from a concrete casting project. The project is composed of two triangular volumes directly derived from the form of the casting units. These forms and the space between them established the spaces for three programs. The enclosures are also made by sets of triangular units inspired by casting units, which achieves variation of transparency by orientations and densities.

Part of the designs of this project is based on a collaborative project, which was intended to create a wall aggregated from eight concrete units with similar forms. The overall form of the project is inspired by the triangular forms of the casting units.
The concrete castings are fabricated with Ange Long and Sophie Roberts.

One prominent element of the concrete casts is the linear patterns. I translate the linear pattern as wood linear claddings as the “translucent” parts of the skin. The claddings themselves are composed of wooden units, which are based on the elongated form of the concrete units.
